Principles of effective Communication

General Communication Skills -

- Cultural differences

Some things particular such as the language or a culture of another nation is hard to understand. People from other cultures might have entirely differently value systems and maybe don't understand you as well as some other people might do understand you but they are still the same as you and are not different.

Any cultural differences between you and your audience, or within your audience, will need to be addressed.  Sometimes even some words or signs that are not acceptable in one language or culture may be misunderstood or considered offensive. So you have to be careful whenever you choose your choice words or even gestures from the one person to another you would usually use.

- Accuracy

Accuracy is an important communication skill, if what you say isn't 100% accuracte then some people around you could not take you seriously. People depend on the information you tell them, if they them wrong information and the accuracy isn't right then they could get it wrong because your information isn't correct and accurate and it could make them look stupid also.

Having to adapt to a new style of your communication to meet the expectations or needs of your audience is what wins the hearts and minds of an audience, you may be tempted to stretch the truth or to make emotive statements to get some feelings for or against some political or social issue.

Interpersonal Skills

- Active engagement

Active engagement is another interpersonal skill. This is when a conversation is taking place and when one person is speaking then the other person can still be engaging in the conversation. To do this the person who is not speaking can just make facial expressions or nod at the person speaking therefore showing the person speaking that you understand or even agree with what the other person is saying. Once the person has finished speaking they will signal you to tell you it your turn to contribute to the conversation and this signal will either be made by asking a question such as ‘Don’t you agree?’ or by the person turning to look at you fully.

- Types of question

Interpersonal skills are skills that a person uses to interact with other people. Types of interpersonal skills include learning to listen and take the time to listen carefully. Another interpersonal skill is to choose your words. Be aware of the words you are using when talking to others. Also relax because when a person is worked up they talk faster making it harder to understand them. Other types of interpersonal skills include clarifying, being positive, understanding stress, and learn to be assertive.
